Basic Cable Abbreviations

+ Multiple of X stitches, plus Y. This isn't an abbreviation, however it is frequently seen with stitch patterns. If your stitch pattern calls for a Multiple of 10 stitches plus 2, you would cast on 10, 20, 30, etc., plus 2 more stitches. So, if you cast on 20 stitches, you would cast on 2 more for a total of 22 stitches.
+ Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches. What this means is to work the stitches as they appear on the next row you will work – not how you worked them on the previous row. So, when you look at the row ahead of you, you would knit the stitches that appear as knit stitches, and purl the stitches that appear as purl stitches.

These are abbreviations that you will see within most cable patterns.

- K: Knit | P: Purl.
- LC: Left Cross | RC: Right Cross.
- LPC: Left Purl Cross | RPC: Right Purl Cross.
- CO: Crossover.
- CN: Cable needle.
